Most full time students are excluded from claiming Housing Benefit. If you are a full time student you can only claim if you are:

• looking after a child or young person
• aged 60 or over
• disabled
• receiving Income Support / Job Seekers Allowance (Income Based)
• aged under 21 in further education but not higher education
• have a non-student partner (it is the non-student who must claim)

All part time students can claim Housing Benefit.

Details and proof of your grant, student loan, university bursary and any other income are needed to work out your benefit.

Full-time students are normally exempt from the payment of Council Tax and as a result Council Tax Benefit is not usually applicable.
