Business Rates
Business Rates, or Non-Domestic Rates, collected by local authorities are the way that those who occupy non-domestic property contribute towards the cost of local services. The rates are pooled by central government and redistributed to local authorities according to the number of people living in the area. The money, together with revenue from Council Tax payers, and other certain sums, is used to pay for the services provided by the Royal Borough of Kingston and other local authorities in the area.
Business Improvement District (BID) Levy
In addition to the Business Rates, non-domestic property in the Kingston Town Centre is subject to a Business Improvement District (BID) Levy.
A Business Improvement District is a precisely defined geographical area within which the businesses have voted to invest collectively in local improvements to enhance their trading environment.
Currently, the BID levy is calculated by multiplying the Rateable Value of each property by one penny. Consultation with the local business community is already underway to consider what will happen after 2009, when the current BID is due to end.
