Bridge Road Local Safety Scheme

About the scheme

The Council is proposing to make highway improvements in Bridge Road.  The scheme will improve safety at junctions, provide more crossing points, provide a new bus stop and improve cycle facilities.  There are a number of parts to the scheme and these will be introduced in phases as money becomes available.

The scheme is being funded by Transport for London (TfL) and a further bid has been made for money to complete the scheme in 2010/11. The South of the Borough Neighbourhood Committee considered the scheme on 3 December 2008 and supported the proposals subject to finding out the views of local residents. You are able to view the agenda and the minutes using the link at the bottom of the page.

If there is support from this consultation, the works at the junction with Sopwith Avenue will start in May 2009. The timescale for the signalled crossings will be dependant upon TfL who deal with the design and installation of traffic signals.

Scheme Consultation

The Council would like to hear your views on the scheme. The scheme elements are given below along with the advantages and disadvantages of each element.  If residents are in favour of the scheme they will be implemented in the following order:

1.  Alterations to the junction at Sopwith Avenue (See Plan 2 below).

This will simplify the layout to reduce confusion and improve safety.  The access to North Parade will be separate from the junction.  A new gap will be made to allow access into the service road in front of the Car Wash business.  However, this will mean that there will be no right turn into the North Parade service road from the Hook bound carriageway of Bridge Road. A new access to the Car Wash will be made in Sopwith Avenue.

Advantages   Disadvantages
1. Conflict between vehicles using Sopwith Avenue and the North Parade Service road will be stopped   1. There will be no right turn from Bridge Road into the North Parade service road for Hook bound traffic
2. Reduction in number of vehicles turning right at Sopwith Avenue.
3. Simplified layout resulting in a better pedestrian environment

2.  New bus stop is to be installed west of Parbury Rise (See Plan 1 below).

This will be on the north side of Bridge Road for the route 71 buses travelling towards Chessington North Station and the World of Adventures.  The new bus stop will be of benefit to those who live in the Chessington Court Estate and Parbury Rise area.

Advantages   Disadvantages
1. Additional stop for local residents   1. Loss of two parking spaces
  2. Possible traffic congestion caused by additional stop

3.  New signalled pedestrian crossing to be installed outside Chessington North Station (See Plan 2 below).

This will be by the bridge to improve access to and from the station and bus stops.

Advantages   Disadvantages
1. New crossing linking the stations, bus stops and surrounding residential areas   1. Loss of approximately eight parking spaces
  2. Additional set of signals could cause extra traffic congestion.

4.  Improvements to the existing signalled crossing by the junction of Bridge Road/Marston Avenue (See Plan 3 below).

This will include a new layout in North Parade to improve the layout for pedestrians.  This will mean that two parking spaces will be lost in North Parade. Cyclists will also be permitted to use the improved crossing.

Advantages   Disadvantages
1. Cyclists are able to use the new crossing   1. Loss of two parking spaces
2. Simplified layout for pedestrians resulting in a better environment   2. Possible conflict between pedestrians and cyclists.
3. Extension to existing crossing central island to provide a central refuge for pedestrians
4. Improved visibility to the right for pedestrians crossing from the ex Indian restaurant to the remodelled pedestrian island

5.  New signalled pedestrian crossing to be installed just west of Parbury Rise (See Plan 1 below).

This will improve access to and from the bus stops and improve safety for those wishing to cross Bridge Road at this point.

Advantages   Disadvantages
1. Improving access to the new bus stop   1. Loss of approximately six parking spaces
2. Improving access to the local area and Ellingham Primary School   2. Additional set of signals could cause extra traffic congestion.

The Next Stage
